Subway, 11 Westgate Street
Following consideration of the amended scheme that has been submitted, BPT is largely supportive of the new changes. We are pleased to see that the existing timber shopfront will be utilised, and feel that the proposed colour and design of the shop front is appropriate within the context of the conservation area due to the use of a neutral and subservient colour palette tailored to the façade of a listed building.
We are additionally supportive of the use of a traditional hanging sign bracket mounted to the timber shop front rather than the building’s stonework. The use of a timber hanging sign in a matching design and colour to the shop front will help to create a harmonious commercial façade whilst adhering to Bath’s expectations of quality, traditional shop signage. However, we would appreciate more information regarding the proposed “sign written graphics”, and maintain our preference for a hand-painted finish throughout Bath’s commercial streetscape and the citywide conservation area.
We continue to strongly advise that a Heritage Statement is requested and uploaded to the planning portal. In the absence of this essential supporting document it is not possible for the LPA or other consultees to make a proper assessment of the application’s impact on the building.
