Our Response

4 Rivers Street is a Grade II terraced Georgian townhouse situated within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. It forms part of the streetscape setting of numerous Grade II Georgian dwellings along Rivers Street and the top of Catherine Place. A significant aspect of the terrace’s character is the regular appearance of basement-level lightwells and a boundary treatment of wrought-iron railings with equivalent external access stairs, either with stone steps and a metal handrail or entirely in metal. There are several examples of timber access stairs along the street which do detract from the terrace’s uniformity of boundary treatment.

We feel the replacement of 4 River’s Street external timber access stairs with a more traditional alternative will benefit the curtilage appearance of a listed building, and the wider, shared character of a terrace of Grade II listed buildings.

However, we note the lack of proposed stone step and balustrade details. We would strongly recommend these are submitted to the LPA before this application can be fully considered.
