Response to Assembly Rooms Refurbishment Plans

A listed building consent application for the Assembly Rooms is currently under consideration by the Local Planning Authority. The National Trust have submitted plans for alterations which include retrofitting for energy efficiency with air source heat pumps and solar panels, and thermal upgrades to windows. Proposed works also include a new interior staircase and replacement flooring.  BPT is supportive of the broad ambitions of the project which would result in an a decarbonised future for the Assembly Rooms. Our submission has encouraged the Trust and Collonny Wellingham Architects, who have produced an exemplary application, to take a more considered and measured approach to double glazing on the principal elevations to ensure that the innovative design solution proposed, which details applied rather than integral glazing bars is the appropriate approach for this important building.  You can read BPT’s submission here.
