Our Response

1 Brunel Square forms part of a Grade II* Victorian complex attached to Bath Spa Station. The building, now converted to commercial space, is characterised by the symmetrical glazed arched vaults in its frontage and the open character of Brunel Square. This site is consequently a positive, public contributor to Bath’s conservation area.

This application focuses on the rear elevation of 1 Brunel Square which faces onto the coach exit from the modern coach station, although it potentially has a lesser degree of pedestrian visibility along the south side of Dorchester Street.

We feel that the addition of another louvre will result in a cluttered appearance not consistent with the varied visibility of this part of the building, and it hasn’t been made clear as to why a second louvre vent is necessary. Whilst we feel that the painting of both vents to match that of the door will somewhat mitigate their visual impact, we would suggest that both the vents and the door are painted a new, more neutral colour rather than bright green, perhaps a muted red to match the existing bricks, to ensure that the door suitably blends with its appearance to mitigate the visual intrusiveness of the new vent.
