External alterations for the remodelling of the front garden to include the installation of a new lifting platform.

Our Response

31 James Street West is a Grade II Victorian terrace within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. It is situated adjacent to the Grade II Green Park Railway Station, a Victorian train station now repurposed as an undercover market; therefore, the external changes to the front façade of the building will need to be considered in conjunction to the setting of other listed assets in this region of the conservation area.

The Trust appreciates the improved layout and access of the front garden. However, we are curious as to why the original "open aspect" lift design has been replaced by a lift more obviously contemporary in design. We felt the previous design to be better suited to its setting, with railings inspired by the proposed boundary treatment in a traditional style that was consequently more visually recessive.
