Proposal
Internal and external alterations to convert basement into 1no. residential dwelling, creation of lightwell and associated internal and external works.
Our Response

6 Cleveland Place East is a Grade II late Georgian terraced dwelling, now with a ground floor shop, situated in the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. Its terraced setting presents a typical boundary treatment of a front-facing lightwell for the lower ground floor, with surrounding wrought iron railings.

The Trust regrets the approach to work which may alter the special architectural or historic interest of a listed building and risk serious harm to heritage, without the relevant listed building consent.

However, we feel that the proposed opening up of the lightwell and reinstatement of wrought iron boundary railings in a traditional style will enhance the appearance of the listed building and its contribution to the appearance and character of the conservation area and the setting of its listed terraced neighbours. We would note that 7 Cleveland Place East does not utilise a Bath stone plinth as noted in the Proposed Elevations, with the railings fixed into a ground-mounted metal base; we would therefore suggest the proposed stone plinth could be based on existing examples along the opposite Cleveland Place West terrace.
