Our Response

1 Abbey Street is a Grade II Georgian townhouse, now shop, situated within the core of the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. It contributes to the setting of a tight cluster of Grade II and Grade II* buildings around Abbey Green, itself a Scheduled Monument.

The Trust notes the proposed “cleaning down” of areas of masonry including window reveals and sills, which we would assume to involve the removal of the existing layer of paint. We would therefore recommend that these areas remain unpainted following cleaning, with the exposed Bath stone treated in an appropriate manner. It is felt revealing the stone material would enhance the architectural interest of the listed building, as well as its listed neighbours, in the majority of which the window reveals have been left unpainted, and the wider conservation area.
