Our Response

The White Lion forms the end of a Grade II early 19th century residential terrace, now a commercial street in which The White Lion has been a public house from the early 20th century. It is situated along the high street within the Batheaston conservation area and forms part of the indicative landscape setting of the World Heritage Site.

We note that despite the proposed reactivation of the skittle alley roadside frontage, this application does not provide proposed signage designs or details, despite this constituting an alteration to the appearance of a listed building. We therefore recommend that further information is provided regarding any potential changes of signage to the building frontage, with amended proposed elevations to reflect this. We continue to emphasise that signage should utilise traditional materials and finishes, and be of a recessive appearance to harmonise with, and minimise impact to, the frontage of a listed building, and conserve and enhance the shopfront vernacular appearance and character of the conservation area.
