Our Response

The Grain Store is an unlisted residential complex built in 2018, situated between Windsor Bridge Road and Lower Bristol Road, on a main arterial route into the city. The site is within the outer region of the Bath World Heritage site.

BPT objects in principle to the implementation of illuminated shop front signage. Bath is defined as a “low illuminated” city in which low light levels enhance the city’s night time character whilst replicating a level and style of lighting contemporary to Bath’s Georgian architectural significance. A consistency of minimal lighting should therefore be maintained throughout the World Heritage site in order to mitigate the visual harm caused by excessive artificial light sources.

Therefore, the Trust is concerned that the use of illuminated signage along the Lower Bristol Road will negatively impact on the townscape character and visual amenity of a significant and popular highway into Bath’s historic core; we feel the shopfront and building façade character of this area should reflect the traditional quality of Bath’s commercial streetscape.

This application is therefore contrary with section 16 of the NPPF, and Policies CP6, D1, D2, D3, and D8 of the Core Strategy and Placemaking Plan. We would advise this application to be withdrawn or revised.
