Our Response

The Trust objects strongly to this signage on the basis that it is excessive in amount and unacceptable in terms of materials and illumination. In particular we note that the applicant has not applied for Listed Building Consent nor submitted a Design/Access or Heritage statement and therefore has not demonstrated any knowledge or understanding of the special interest of the listed building. The use of perspex, vinyl and foamex lettering is inappropriate for the listed building, signage should in the large part be high quality timber or metal with hand painted signage or applied lettering in a high quality material. It is not clear what material the fascias are proposed to be but they should be hard wood timber in a matt colour finish.

The use of illumination is also excessive; there is a case for some illumination, particularly the pub hanging sign, but not for multiple trough lights, lanterns and fairy lights. The gold lanterns appear to be overly decorative and apparently uninformed by any reference to the history of the building and the appropriate stylistic response in terms of heritage style lanterns. The overall effect is a plethora of cluttering low quality additions to the listed building which intrude upon the elevations and detract from its special architectural and aesthetic interest. We strongly recommend that the applicant return to the drawing board whilst taking some reference from the Council’s own guidance on signage. Further information can be found in our own signage guidance: http://www.bath-preservation-trust.org.uk/about-us-2/publications/

The proposed scheme would neither preserve nor enhance the special interest of the listed building and would therefore detract from the special qualities of the WHS. The scheme would be contrary to the Planning (Listed Building and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, Section 16 (Conserving and Enhancing the Historic Environment) of the NPPF, policies B1, B4, and CP6 of the B&NES Core Strategy and policies CP6, HE1 of the Placemaking Plan. We would therefore recommend the application be amended or refused.
