Proposal
Display of 2 no. externally illuminated fascia signs, 2 no. non-illuminated fascia signs, 1 no. externally illuminated hanging sign, 2 no. non illuminated hoarding signs, 5 no. LED floodlights, 1…
Our Response

The proposed signage is excessive in both amount and in terms of illumination. In particular the fact that there are 10 lights on the front elevation not including a trough light for the hanging sign is entirely inappropriate and will have a detrimental impact on the local historic street scene, conservation area and the wider World Heritage Site (WHS) . The proposed lighting should be significantly rationalised to the lighting for the hanging sign, and at most two lights on the elevation. There are also too many signs on the elevations and whilst the hand-painting is an appropriate approach, these should also be reduced in number. We would propose the removal of the oval framed picture of a lady, and potentially the green writing to the right of the elevation. We also note the applicant has not provided scaled elevation drawings and therefore this application should not have been registered.

The proposed scheme would neither preserve nor enhance the special interest of the listed building, the character and appearance of the conservation area and would detract from the special qualities of the WHS. The scheme would be contrary to Section 16 (Conserving and Enhancing the Historic Environment) of the NPPF, policies B1, B4, and CP6 of the B&NES Core Strategy and policies CP6, HE1, D.9, B.4, of the Placemaking Plan. We would therefore recommend the application be amended or refused.
