The Ram, 20 Claverton Buildings, Widcombe

The Ram is a Grade II public house, previously three late Georgian terraced dwellings, situated within the Widcombe region of the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site.

BPT does not object to the application’s proposed signage; we feel the use of a neutral signage colour will be more aesthetically appropriate, and will suitably complement the natural Bath stone palette of the building’s façade. The use of traditional finishes such as hand-painted lettering will result in a suitably high-quality appearance that will enhance the appearance of a listed building whilst adhering to Bath’s continued usage of attractive, traditional shop front and signage designs, materials, and colours.

We also support the removal of several notice boards from the front elevation of the building, as this will suitably declutter the appearance of a listed building with positive aesthetic consequences for The Ram’s historic setting.

However, the Trust maintains some concerns over the building’s proposed illumination. Considering Bath’s character as a “low illuminated” city, the addition of an extra lights by the public house’s entrance and to the rear elevation will contribute to further detrimental artificial light spill. We would therefore recommend that the volume of lighting remains the same to prevent any further erosion of night time townscape character.
