Flat 1, 15 Alfred Street, City Centre

15 Alfred Street is a Grade II Georgian townhouse, now divided into flats, situated within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. The dwelling is positioned on the end of Alfred Street, and consequently overlooks the narrow historic alleyway of St Andrews Terrace.

The Trust is supportive of the proposed replacement of an inappropriate, late 20th century casement window, which currently jars with the use of Victorian one-over-one timber sash windows in a traditional style, whilst partially obstructing the original window’s opening with a plywood infill panel. We are pleased to see that the proposed window will restore the height of the original window reveal, and will be of a more harmonious design to complement the façade and detailing of a listed building.

We would encourage that the surviving box frame and pulley system should be restored and integrated into the new window fitting. We would additionally recommend that the removal of the existing window should be used as an opportunity to fully document the box frame photographically before any further works are discussed with the relevant officer.

Furthermore, due to the visible deterioration of the stone sill, we would recommend that should any repairs be considered as part of the works for the installation of the new window, the relevant documents assessing current condition and schedule of repairs would need to be submitted.
