Our Response

2A Wood Street forms part of the Grade I terrace, now shops, along Wood Street as part of John Wood’s original Queen Square development. It is situated within the core of the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site, and remains a significant example of Georgian Bath’s usage of Palladian principles in a Bath stone vernacular.

BPT does not object the proposed signage works to this building. We are supportive of the retained black and gold colour scheme, and the continued visual interest provided through the use of a pictorial hanging sign.

However, we maintain that the shop front should be hand painted rather than utilising vinyl graphics; Bath has an established, high quality commercial streetscape of bespoke, vernacular signage in which the use of cheap, low maintenance materials such as vinyl and plastic are visually incongruous. It is additionally ill-suited to the façade of a Grade I listed building, which would be better enhanced through the addition of quality traditional signage with a hand painted finish.
