External alterations for the reinstatement of railings and masonry as a result of car accident in April 2021.
Our Response

1-7 Great Pulteney Street, now Connaught Mansions, forms part of a Grade I group of late 18th century terraced townhouses situated within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage Site. Due to the terrace’s architectural homogeneity, scale, and the intentionally designed sightlines between the Holburne Museum and Great Pulteney Bridge, Great Pulteney Street constitutes an exceptional example of Georgian Town Planning and Georgian Architecture which contribute towards the OUV of the World Heritage site.

BPT is supportive of the proposed repairs following damage from a car accident. We commend the retention and repair of severely damaged elements such as the historic wrought iron railings.

We feel that the proposed repair works could offer a positive opportunity for the use or reinstatement of traditional materials, such as stone copings where the existing cast concrete copings have been badly damaged.

We similarly query the use of pointing “to match with existing cement based mortar” for masonry repairs to the facing of the vaults, and instead suggest a lime based mortar as a more appropriate alternative.
