Our Response

Cleveland Bridge is a Grade II* late Georgian bridge within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. It remains a busy vehicular route across the River Avon, and an important architectural feature within Bath’s riverscape.

BPT is supportive of the proposed remedial works that will ensure the future stability of the bridge. Due to the existing use of concrete for strengthening purposes in the 1990s, the use of like-for-like repairs in these areas does not constitute a loss of historic fabric.

However, the Trust questions why an application has been submitted now when faults with the bridge’s integrity were first noted in 2014. We uphold the principles of the continuous maintenance of heritage assets to ensure that initial, small problems do not escalate and irreparably damage aspects of historic fabric or significance.
