Proposal
Replacement of existing rear casement windows with new traditional sash windows.
Our Response This building is part of a highly significant group composition of national importance and therefore the accompanying information should be proportionately detailed to this significance. There is little historic research submitted other than a generic narrative about Adam’s overall composition; there is no historic research regarding this particular building, nor any details on the current windows, when they were installed etc (when the building was cantilevered or later?) and what associated special interest there could be attached to these windows. Without this information it is difficult to make a planning judgement on the impact of the change of windows and the altered window openings to this highly visible asset. There is also no justification given or public benefit proposed to outweigh the harm to historic fabric proposed by the intervention. It is our view that unless a more thorough, detailed historic assessment can be submitted, along with an impact statement and large scale drawings of joinery, including glazing bar profiles (and reasons why a particular profile has been chosen) then this application should be refused on the basis of insufficient information. The applicant could look to only replace the windows in the openings that already exist but this would still require a more thorough submission.
