Proposal
Display of 1 no. illuminated fascia sign and 1 no. non-illuminated projecting sign.
Our Response

The Trust objects to this application on the basis that plastic and Perspex are entirely inappropriate materials for this signage. There is already a decently sized wooden fascia on this building; this should be used and the wording sign-painted on to the fascia.

We do not have an objection to a new hanging sign but again this should be a wooden sign traditionally signwritten and it should be fixed to the fascia and not the stonework, which is already very pockmarked. We also object to the external illumination of the fascia which is unnecessary and will harm both historic fabric and the special interest of the building.

The proposed scheme would neither preserve nor enhance the special interest of the listed building and would fail to maintain or enhance the character of the conservation area. It would therefore detract from the special qualities of the WHS. The scheme would be contrary to the Planning (Listed Building and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, Section 16 (Conserving and Enhancing the Historic Environment) of the NPPF, policies B1, B4, and CP6 of the B&NES Core Strategy and policies CP6, D2, HE1, BD1, B.4, B2 of the Placemaking Plan. We would therefore recommend the application be refused.
