Our Response

6 Raby Mews forms part of two pairs of Grade II late Georgian mews buildings designed by John Pinch the Elder situated within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. They form part of the direct ancillary setting of the Grade II* late Georgian terrace 1-17 Raby Place, and were designed to relate to their immediate residential context; their primary elevations face the rear of Raby Place, whilst their roadside elevations are more visually indicative of their recessive, outbuilding function.

The Trust does not oppose the principle of development. We feel that the reuse and works proposed to the fabric of the building will be of benefit to the ongoing conservation of the listed building and would result in an improved appearance and character of the streetscape.

6 Raby Mews is largely defined by its simple, functional character and recessive size, with timber planked doors and window shutters facing onto the street. Should this application be consented, the building’s modest appearance and scale must be retained as part of the special historic and architectural interest of a listed building, and the wider mews terrace. We would resist changes to the elevation that are too overtly domestic in design.

Considering the maintained exposure of the south-west elevation designed to face the rear of Raby Place, we would highlight the importance of retaining historic features with intended aesthetic merit such as the arched door recesses.
