Internal and external alterations for the replacement of existing window with door at rear elevation.

Our Response

44 High Street, formerly the Crown & Anchor public house, is a Grade II early 19th century building that has been converted to residential use, situated within the Upper Weston character area of the Bath conservation area and World Heritage Site. The application focuses on the rear elevation of the building, visible from Penn Hill Road, but slightly recessed into the ground and therefore of a reduced public visibility.

We highlight the disappearance of the central and western chimney stacks within the proposed elevation, and query whether this is a drawing error or forms part of the proposals. Considering the chimneys’ visual prominence along the high street and contribution to the building’s architectural interest, we note the need for particular clarity as to their treatment.
