Our Response

4 Beaufort Place forms part of a Grade II late Georgian terrace situated within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. The terrace is noted for its modest scale and character, compiled of a series of two-storey stepped residential dwellings bookended by a shop at Nos. 1-2, and a converted public house at No. 11, with clearly demarcated boundary plots of dwarf ashlar walls that add to the interspersed green appearance of this portion of the conservation area.

The Trust is supportive of the proposed reinstatement of the missing railings in a style to match those existing along Beaufort Place. We feel this would add to the historic and aesthetic integrity of a series of listed buildings, and would preserve and enhance the appearance and character of the conservation area through the proposed use of a traditional design and fixing into the stone boundary wall. We would however highlight the benefits of retaining hedging and/or planting behind the proposed railings to maintain 4 Beaufort Place’s contribution to the shared, green appearance of the terrace’s front gardens.
