Our Response

33 Bathford Hill is a Grade II late Georgian dwelling situated along the main thoroughfare within the Bathford conservation area and the indicative setting of the World Heritage site.

BPT is supportive of the sensitive retrofit of historic buildings as part of a ‘whole house’ approach in light of the current Climate Emergency. We feel that the replacement of contemporary glazing with slimline double-glazing, of an appropriate design and thickness, would be a positive addition that will improve the thermal efficiency of the building, and ensure the sustainability of its residential use. However, we maintain that the suitability of energy-efficiency changes should be assessed on a case-by-case basis in relation to the special historic or architectural interest of a listed building and other measures implemented.

We are disappointed in the retrospective nature of this application, with works having gone ahead without listed building consent. We do not condone any unconsented alterations or changes to the fabric of a listed building, regardless of the proposed level of harm.

While we welcome sensitive retrofitting the Trust and the LPA would be unable to make a proper assessment of the impact of the work on the heritage asset as there is a lack of appropriate drawings. We would strongly recommend that existing and proposed elevations and window profiles are included to fully elaborate on any proposed changes to the appearance of a listed building.
