Proposal
External works comprising the restoration of the pavement in front of 2-5 Spencers Belle Vue and the adjustment of existing ironworks (services / manhole covers) to fit the re-layed level…
Our Response

This application concerns the raised pavement that forms the ancillary setting of Spencer’s Belle Vue terrace, situated within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. 1-5 Spencer’s Belle Vue are Grade II listed Georgian townhouses, and are therefore the oldest section of the terrace which are the subject of this application.

The Trust is supportive of the proposed remedial repairs for the continuous use and good material condition of the pavement. However, we note that no information has been supplied regarding the type of mortar or regrouting to be used for the relaying of the pennant stone slabs. There is additionally no clarification as to whether the proposed replacement pennant stone slabs would be new or reclaimed, which could have a drastic visual impact on the setting of multiple listed buildings and the wider conservation area. We would therefore ask that these details are supplied to the LPA before this application can progress any further, to ensure that the most sympathetic means of repair are utilised.

We would additionally ask for clarification regarding "the front wall that seems to have bulged out from its original line will remain in that position"; whilst we acknowledge this is not an active element of this application, we would query its location and stability, should further works be required in the near future.
