Proposal
External alterations for the re introduction of copper lantern to existing entrance overthrow.
Our Response

3 Cavendish Place forms part of a Grade I late Georgian terrace within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. Significantly, bespoke external detailing such as the attached railings and lantern overthrows explicitly feature within the listing description, and remain a positive feature within the streetscape with strong aesthetic and evidential value as to the original function and appearance of the terrace.

BPT is supportive of the sensitive reinstatement and enhancement of original historic features. The addition of a new copper lantern will restore a missing aspect of the intended historic appearance and function of the overthrow whilst complementing the façade of a Grade I listed terrace. We further appreciate the installation of working light fittings within the historic-style lantern head which will enhance both the appearance and public amenity of the conservation area.

However, we would like to emphasise the importance of a retained, uniform aesthetic along this terrace frontage which forms a significant part of its recognised historic value. Consequently, we would encourage that any further applications along Cavendish Place are consistent in design, materials, and lighting quality with this application, should it be consented, in order to ensure a homogeneity of appearance.
