Our Response

The Trust objects strongly to this application on the basis that the awning and planter trough sign are unacceptable and harmful additions to the listed building, its setting, and the street scene. This is an important historic street that is part of the set piece of Queen Square, Circus and Royal Crescent; it is a largely domestic terrace in nature, with uniform sequences of classical symmetry and features. The awning in particular would intrude upon the façade of this listed asset, obscuring architectural features and therefore harming the special interest of the building. Fixings would also harm the historic fabric. Bar the brass plaque (which may be a little large) the proposals would also detract from the distinct character of this specific part of the conservation area.

The proposed scheme would neither preserve nor enhance the special interest of the listed building nor its setting, it would harm the character and appearance of the conservation area and would detract from the special qualities of the WHS. The scheme would be contrary to to the Planning (Listed Building and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, Section 16 (Conserving and Enhancing the Historic Environment) of the NPPF, policies B1, B2, B4, and CP6 of the B&NES Core Strategy and policies CP6, D2, HE1, D9, B.4, of the Placemaking Plan. We would therefore recommend the application be amended or refused.
