Our Response

21 Milsom Street is a Grade II Georgian terraced building, now shop, situated within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. It forms part of Milsom Street’s popular retail streetscape with designed sightlines into Bath city centre, and retains group value through the architectural uniformity of the shared street-facing facade.

BPT is not opposed to the proposed replacement of the existing roof lanterns that have been assessed to be of negligible historic value, and contemporary in origin. We note that the trusses supporting the larger rear lantern are 19th century, and support their retention as part of the building’s material and evidential significance.

However, we would note that the proposed replacement is due to the poor condition of the existing structures. The Trust would like to emphasise the importance of regular maintenance and repair, particularly to the roof, to ensure the continued health of the overall building. We maintain that smaller issues should be repaired immediately to prevent them growing into larger, more serious problems that could result in the irreplaceable loss of historic fabric.
