Display of 1 no. backlit facia sign, 1 no. illuminated projecting hanging sign and 1 no. internal neon illuminated sign for mixed A3 (Restaurant) and A5 (Takeaway and Hot Food) retail unit.

Our Response

This is a prominent listed building in the Southgate area of the city, and whilst we acknowledge that KFC have gone some way to ‘toning down’ their corporate signage, we question if revisions to the signage could go further to respect the special interest of the listed building and the sensitive local historic environment. The material of the white mounted lettering is a concern and a better approach would be traditional sign painting with some external illumination. The material of the hanging sign should be timber sign painted; applied vinyls on aluminium is not appropriate and will have a low quality appearance. The use of neon signage inside the windows is also detrimental to the visual appearance of the building and we question whether it is needed or not given the general popularity/recognition of the brand.
