Our Response

147 Church Road is a Grade II mid to late 19th century detached villa situated within the Combe Down character area of the Bath conservation area and World Heritage Site. It features a three bay symmetrical façade with a rusticated ground floor and Ionic-style porch. It forms the setting for multiple Grade II mid-19th villas along the road at 149, 153-155, 157, and 159 Church Road. The Grade II early to mid-19th century villas 139 and 141 Church road are located further to the west adjacent to the junction of Tyning Road. Whilst there is some variation in architectural style, the street is coherent in its use of Bath stone ashlar, one-over-one timber sash windows, and slate roofs with a hipped profile and defined, symmetrical chimney stacks.

We have some concerns regarding proposals to paint the existing, white joinery in ‘slate grey’. The streetscape features a high proportion of listed buildings which have retained a homogenous, traditional approach in which window joinery is painted white or off-white. We maintain that repainting in a white or off-white with a matt finish would be more aesthetically appropriate to the appearance of a listed building and the shared streetscape character of a group of listed buildings and their contribution to the conservation area.
