Our Response

This application concerns a proposed scheme of works for 4-13 Cavendish Place, which form a Grade I late Georgian stepped terrace of townhouses situated within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage site. Significantly, bespoke external detailing such as the attached railings and lantern overthrows explicitly feature within the listing description, and remain a positive feature within the streetscape with strong aesthetic and evidential value as to the original function and appearance of the terrace. A separate application for the reinstatement of a copper lantern to the existing entrance overthrow was submitted 2019 and consented 2020, which the Trust supported. This has since been successfully installed.

In the interest of transparency, we would like to highlight that the Trust does financially contribute to the work of the World Heritage Enhancement Fund.

BPT is supportive of the sensitive reinstatement and enhancement of original historic features. We are pleased to see that the same design schematics are being used as those proposed for the works at 3 Cavendish Place, which would establish a homogenous ironwork and lantern treatment across the terrace frontage, with benefit to the aesthetic and architectural significance of multiple Grade I buildings. The addition of new copper lanterns, and new overthrows to 9-13 Cavendish Place, would restore a missing aspect of the designed historic appearance and function of the terrace’s uniform boundary treatment whilst complementing the façade of a Grade I listed terrace. We further appreciate the installation of working light fittings within the historic-style lantern heads which would enhance both the appearance and public amenity of the conservation area.

We feel the ironwork features proposed would positively contribute to and enhance the appearance of a Grade I listed terrace and the character and appearance of the Bath conservation area, whilst conserving an aspect of Bath’s Georgian streetscape and town planning OUV as a World Heritage site. We feel this is a positive example of the improvement and conservation of one of Bath’s distinctive historic and aesthetic characteristics which define this region of the public realm.
