Proposal
External alteration for the installation of iron railings on wall either side of front gate following removal of temporary trellis.
Our Response

109 Church Road, otherwise known as Claremont House, is a Grade II early 19th century detached dwelling situated within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage Site. It is located adjacent to the Grade II early 19th century Union Chapel, and is a natural landmark in the street due to its imposing three storey height and vertical emphasis. The streetscape is characterised by a mix of boundary walls and wrought iron railings; whilst there is some variety in style and fixing type, it ultimately culminates in an attractive and distinctive streetscape character.

BPT is supportive of the proposed reinstatement of iron railings to match the gate already in situ. Surviving lead fixings on the gateposts indicate the historic presence of railings which have since been removed, and therefore this would reinstate the appearance of a listed building, in keeping with the wider boundary character of the conservation area. The associated repair works to the stone wall in like-for-like materials are acknowledged as a heritage gain. However, we note the unauthorised timber trellis mounted on the top of the wall and encourage this to be taken down.
