10 Upper Lansdown Mews, Lansdown, Bath

10 Upper Lansdown Mews is a Grade II early 19th century dwelling, previously a garden house to Grade I 10 Lansdown Crescent, situated within the Bath conservation area and World Heritage Site. The street-facing elevation has had a number of 20th century additions, but the use of Bath stone ashlar on the original southern elevation indicates a more formalised building design in contrast with the concentration of coursed rubble mews dwellings along Upper Lansdown Mews. The coursed rubble stone boundary walls along the roadside are indicative of the area’s material vernacular.

We note that as part of the proposed construction of the timber orangery, the existing eastern boundary wall separating 10 Upper Lansdown Mews from 9 Upper Lansdown Mews appears to be increased in height and finished in a flat line rather than the existing curve. It is unclear as to whether this wall is historic in origin and how it would be extended. It appears to be physically connected to the dwelling and therefore may be considered to be included within the curtilage listing of the building. We therefore recommend that further details of this aspect of the works proposed is clarified with the case officer.
