In 1972 UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) adopted the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage which allowed for the creation of a list of natural and cultural sites which are of outstanding universal value.

The City of Bath was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1987 because it met three of the criteria for the selection of cultural world heritage sites. These three criteria are:

– Represents a masterpiece of human creative genius;

– Exhibits an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town planning or landscape design.

– Be an outstanding example of a type of building or architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history.
