Beckford Cabinet
Thanks to donations following our recent appeal, and external funding, this cabinet has now been secured for the Tower collection, ensuring that it remains in England and on public display.
Believed to have been made during the 1830s for his retreat at Lansdown Tower, the cabinet was probably designed by William Beckford (1760-1844) and the architect Henry Edmund Goodridge (1797-1864).
Made of fine oak with a heavy cornice and gilt mouldings, like all Beckford furniture from Bath, the cabinet is highly architectonic in style. The carved roundels attached to the frieze are a recurring motif throughout the interiors of Lansdown Tower, which suggest that this piece was intended for the Tower rooms. The cabinet also bears Beckford’s heraldic motifs in the four gilt cinquefoils on the cabinet door.
