Visitor Information for Herschel Museum

Opening Times

The museum is open weekdays, except Wednesdays, 1pm to 5pm (last entry 4.30pm); weekends and bank holidays, 11am to 5pm (last entry 4.30pm).

From 14 July to 1 September the museum will open Wednesday afternnoons in addition to its usual opening hours.

2010 Admission Prices

Adults £4.50, Students £3, Concessions £4, Children £2.50, Family ticket (2 adults & 2 children) £11.00, Groups £4 per person.

Registered disabled visitors £3.00 plus free audio guide.

Concessions to B&NES residents with Discovery Card, Bath Preservation Trust joint ticket holders, CPRE scheme members, Society for Popular Astronomy members, Friends of Royal Astronomical Society.

Free entry to members of The William Herschel Society, members of the public showing our valid ‘Gift Aid’ card, Mayor’s Guides, staff & volunteers from all Bath Museums with valid pass, Museum Association members, Royal Astronomical Society members, registered tour group leaders (with proof of identity).

Visitor Facilities

The Star Vault Astronomy auditorium – Constructing the Heavens
A short award-winning film narrated by Sir Patrick Moore introduces the visitor to the work of the Herschels and its impact on modern space exploration.

Workshop touchscreen interpretation

Herschel Museum, touchscreen

The workshop where Herschel ground his mirrors and constructed his telescopes is brought to life by a new touchscreen demonstrating the tools and machinery he used.

Flip books
Several rare books such as Caroline Herschel’s visitors book can be viewed in detail by a flip page computer programme.

Family Trails and Handling Box
Sirius Says and Dog Stars – two trails with a handling box enhance a visit to the museum for families and younger visitors.

A written Japanese translation of the Herschel Museum Tour is now available for visitors.

An audio tour of the museum is available.

Disabled Facilities

A disabled parking space is situated outside the museum in New King Street.

An audio tour is available for visitors who are blind or partially sighted, accompanied by a book of tactile images.

A virtual tour is available to visitors with mobility problems on the ground floor; it is also possible to see Constructing the Heavens on a screen in the reception area.

Tactile plans of the museum and garden are available with raised lettering and Braille.

Workshop handling – replicas of objects such as Herschel’s polishing machine situated in the workshop are designed to be handled
