Why not try making your own version with modelling clay? In the session, we will take and print a photograph of your profile for you to work from. Then you can frame your work of art to take home. EXHIBITION: Science and Spirituality: Astronomy and the Benedictine Order

Since its re-establishment after the reformation in the early 19th century, there have been several members of the Catholic community at Downside Abbey who harboured a strong interest in astronomy, including a monk who knew and corresponded with William Herschel.  In the middle of the 19th century, an observatory was actually built within the monastic grounds; shortly afterwards, it was destroyed by fire.  The drawings and designs for this building have only recently come to light.

Tuesday 13 September 7pm Priory Barn, Newtown, Bradford on Avon BA15 1NQ £4 on door Jonathon Hall, Member of the Herschel Society and Wiltshire Astronomers, talks about the famous brother and sister astronomers William and Caroline Herschel. William was one of the first people to accurately plot our galaxy from observations he had made of double-stars, and discovered the planet Uranus from his Bath garden in 1781. Both he and Caroline were also gifted musicians.
